Today is Sabinas birthday. Our big 2 year old. Her day started with awe and wonder as she looked up at her walls and ceiling adorned with new stick-on ‘pua’ her maori short word for purerehua – butterflies. Then, presents and birthday songs at breakfast-time. Driving the south coast to kohanga reo the view to Te Wai Pounamu was crystal clear, listening to two of her favorite songs on repeat: Regina Spektor’s “Fidelity” and Herbs version of “E Papa Waiari”. Sabina calls the sea monana, instead of moana. At kohanga, Arapera came especially for birthday facepainting – Sabina sat very still for a big butterfly on her beautiful face.
